Over the last five years, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has added an average of 2,783 fleets to its high-risk commercial motor vehicle list. Even after interventions in the form of warnings, safety audits, and or formal written plans to change their procedures, many organizations struggle to improve their safety records.
“There is no individual silver bullet when it comes to effectively addressing fleets; from quality training, safety culture, and supportive technologies, it takes a multitude of efforts to have a meaningful impact,” said Vik Ramaswamy, Director, Risk Services at Safety National. “That said, the most impactful decision any fleet or operations manager can make is hiring the right people who have a demonstrated history of safe driving. Motor vehicle records (MVRs) capture that story and, per the FMCSA’s data, tell the tale quite accurately.”
